Older carers are saving the UK billions of pounds a year

Age UK has released new figures that show that older carers are saving the state billions of pounds a year. The study found that there is an abundance of older carers who between them are saving services such as the NHS and care organisations a staggering £5.9bn a year through their unpaid care work, whether that’s caring for a spouse, a family member or even a friend.

In the last 7 years there has been a massive increase in carers 80 years old and over from 301,000 to 417,000, equating to an increase of nearly 39%, meaning today 1 in 7 people ages over 80 are providing care to someone.

What’s more astonishing is that 144,000 of those carers are providing care and support for 35+ hours a week, whilst a further 156,000 are caring for 20+ hours a week.

The study predicts that as the UK’s population continues to grow, by 2030 there will be more than 760,000 carers over the age of 80!
